Superion Welcomes MP Tako Van Popta for a Meaningful Discussion on Cybersecurity and Canadian Small Business

March 31, 2026

At Superion, we were recently honoured to welcome Tako Van Popta, Conservative Member of Parliament for Langley Township—Fraser Heights, to visit our facility and spend time learning more about what we do and the work we are doing to help protect Canadian businesses in an increasingly hostile digital environment.

Mr. Van Popta’s visit came after his office reached out in response to a previous article we had published on cybersecurity. We appreciated the opportunity to continue that conversation in person and to share firsthand insight into the very real cyber threats facing small and medium-sized businesses across Canada today.

For many organizations, cybersecurity is still misunderstood as a problem only large enterprises need to worry about. That is simply not reality. Small and medium-sized businesses are often among the most exposed. They typically have fewer internal resources, less margin for operational disruption, and a much harder time recovering when a serious incident occurs. A cyberattack does not just create technical problems. It can interrupt operations, damage client trust, create insurance complications, trigger compliance issues, and in some cases put the future of the business itself at risk.

During our discussion, we spoke about the evolving nature of cyber threats and the growing pressures Canadian businesses are facing. We also talked about the difficult position many organizations find themselves in: they are expected to become more secure, qualify for cyber insurance, meet rising client and regulatory expectations, and do all of it while still running lean, productive businesses.

This is where we believe the conversation needs to mature.

Cybersecurity cannot remain a vague recommendation or an afterthought. It needs to become a practical business priority, supported by clearer guidance, stronger education, and a more realistic framework for small and medium-sized organizations. We also discussed the importance of government playing a constructive role in helping businesses better understand what “good” security actually looks like, what is reasonable to implement, and how public policy and the cyber insurance landscape can work together more effectively rather than creating confusion and friction.

There is a growing need for a more coordinated approach — one that helps businesses protect themselves before a crisis, not just respond after the damage is done. Canadian business owners need clarity. They need practical standards. They need better support. And they need an environment where doing the right thing from a cybersecurity standpoint is more achievable, more consistent, and easier to navigate.

We appreciated Mr. Van Popta taking the time to visit, listen, and engage in a serious conversation about issues that matter deeply to the business community. It was encouraging to see interest in the real-world challenges facing Canadian SMBs, especially as cyber risk continues to rise and the consequences of inaction continue to grow.

At Superion, these are not theoretical discussions. This is the world we operate in every day. We work directly with organizations that rely on technology to run, grow, and serve their clients — and we see firsthand how critical it is for cybersecurity, resilience, and business continuity to be treated as leadership issues, not just IT issues.

We are proud to be part of that conversation, proud to advocate for stronger protection for Canadian businesses, and grateful for the opportunity to share our perspective with elected leaders who are taking the time to understand what is happening on the ground.

We thank Mr. Van Popta for visiting Superion and for the conversation. We look forward to continuing to do our part in helping Canadian businesses become more secure, more resilient, and better prepared for the realities of today’s threat landscape.
